REGISTERED NURSE (RN) LICENSE PATHWAYS

 

 

There are several academic ways to complete the requirements what will allow an individual to take the RN exam. Pierce College Nursing department offers three programs depending on the academic path you choose to follow.

  • Pathway I: Associate of Science in Nursing Program with eligibility to sit for Register Nurse Exam plus option to continue with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN with RN + Transfer to BSN)
    • ASN and General Education Requirements (CSU GE-Breath): Plan C
    • CSU Northridge ADN to BSN Collaborative Program
    • This option allows transfer to most CSU BSN Programs
  • Pathway II: Associate of Science in Nursing Program with eligibility to sit for Register Nurse Exam (ADN with RN)
    • ASN and General Education Requirements: Plan B, Speech, Math, Anthropology/Sociology
  • Pathway III: LVN to RN Nursing Program with eligibility to sit for Register Nurse Exam (non-degree)
    • Licensed Vocational Nurses wishing to acquire RN license only.

Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN/ADN) RN's have a unique scope of practice and can practice independently, although they also collaborate with all members of the health care team to provide the care needed by each patient as an individual. Two years ADN, Exam Registered Nurse (RN)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) RN's with BSN are required for some nursing specialties as well as leadership positions in administration or management typically require at least a BSN degree.* Four years BSN, Exam Registered Nurse (RN)
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Six years MSN, RN, Exam Nurse Practitioner (NP)

*According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, RNs can advance to management positions through work experience, regardless of degree level.
